TRTC squad member TJ Hall completed his very first Ironman on 24 June 2018 at Ironman Nice. IM Nice is a race I’ve completed myself and to date is my favourite. I know the course very well – with its swim in the Mediterranean, bike through the Alps, and run along the Nice’s historic waterfront.
TJ threw himself into the deep end by choosing Nice as a first Ironman race. Steeped in history, IM Nice has a fierce reputation and is one of the most popular races on the circuit. The bike course is as hard as it is beautiful, a closed road single loop circuit with 2000 meters of climbing.
TJ was targeting a 1.20/1.30 swim time and he exited the water in 1.21. Terrific job! For the bike, we knew he was capable of a time between 6.15 – 7.00hrs but the art of racing is being able to deliver on the big day. He did exactly that finishing in 6.38. TJ finished 150th on the bike in his age category, gaining 43 places. Another job well done! The run was the discipline where TJ knew he could really shine and he did just that. TJ finished with an incredible 3.40 marathon time and 33rd in his age category gaining a phenomenal 118 places.
With a time of 11 hrs 57 minutes over all 3 disciplines, TJ finished in the top half of both his age group and all finishers. An amazing accomplishment in a first Ironman event.
Take a bow TJ Hall. You are an ‘IRONMAN’.
