Now in its 28th year, the Royal Windsor Triathlon is one of the UK’s longest running and most popular events. With both Olympic and Sprint distances, and Windsor Castle as a backdrop, it’s been awarded the British Triathlon Foundation’s ‘Event of the Year’ seven times.
Eight TRTC athletes participated in the Sprint distance of a 750m swim in the iconic River Thames, a 19.8km open road cycling route and a 5.4km run through the Windsor Great Park along the green vistas of the Long Walk to finish in the picturesque surroundings of historic Windsor. It was also the first outing for the brand new Team TRTC triathlon kit!
The day was overcast with light rain and there were some nervous moments for Team TRTC, six of whom were participating in their first triathlon race. In particular, overcoming those first moments of ‘swim panic’ as the hordes all drove for the water was a tremendous learning experience.
Even though everyone managed the stress of the swim really well, it impacted the necessary focus for quicker transition times. While it’s important to remember that in the moment, each athlete does the best they can, given their experience, training and ability, it highlights the importance of practicing and planning the transitions in addition to the individual disciplines.
Everyone finished the course with huge smiles and it was proud moments for all with their finishers medals!
So well done to Mollie Melia-Redgrave, Emily Hakin, Khyati Patel, Dave Downey , Mike Rosenstock, Joe Johnsey , Helly Bewick & Martin Jennings!
